This depends on the quantity,
quality, and type of label that you require. Most product
labels found on products in a typical grocery store are pre-printed
in mass quantity by a label manufacturer who specializes in printing
labels. They are usually purchased in quantities starting at
10,000 pieces up to millions of pieces and the same label is printed
on each of the labels due to the fact that changes are expensive due
to setup costs involved with the traditional label printing process.
These setup charges are typically plate and film charges. The
film is used to create a printing plate that is used to print a
particular color on the label. The plate and film charge are
per color used typically vary from $25-$80 per color used and are
one-time charges. The label manufacturer keeps these plates on
file for future runs of the same label. Pre-printed labels
are best for companies who have a product that they sell in large
quantities are set in the design that they are looking for.
Lead times on pre-printed labels can be anywhere from 1 week up to 4
weeks.
Blank labels come blank
from the manufacturer and are made for running through your own
printing equipment such as a laser or ink jet printer that feeds a
typical 8.5" X 11" sheet of paper or a thermal or direct
thermal printer which takes blank labels on a roll. Blank
labels are recommended for applications such as address and mailing
where each label has something different printed on it. Blank
labels are also good in cases where a company requires a labels, but
has many different varieties and only needs a few hundred (or even
less than 100 labels) of each type. These labels can be
typically purchased from a label manufacturer who supplies blank
product and in the case of labels on a 8.5" X 11" sheets
at a typical office store (at a higher price usually). Lead
times on blank product are typically fast due to the fact that these
products are often stocked.
